From farmland to high rises: A brief history of Surfers Paradise

Sightseeing and Dining

1952 Surfers Paradise

Our luxury sightseeing vessel, Spirit of Elston, is named in recognition of Surfers Paradise’s history. But what even is Elston?

Elston was the first official name of the town of what we now know and love as Surfers Paradise. Long before the hustle and bustle and the striking city skylines we are used to, the city was a quiet agricultural region. Over the years as its potential and popularity grew, the dull farmlands turned into the glitzy, must-see tourist destination in South-East Queensland.

As you cruise through the Gold Coast waterways, you’re drifting past one hundred years of history.

Cavill Avenue

The early days

The Yugambeh People first occupied the Gold Coast and South-East Queensland region before the arrival of European settlement. They hunted for fish in the waters hosted ceremonial invitations where Coomera is located.

The region was settled by James Beattie in 1869 and used for farmland. Timber cutters relished the rich cedar and tallowwood forests in the hinterlands and the area along the rivers were used to grow crops and sugarcane. In 1889, the Gold Coast region was officially called Elston, named after the Southport Postmaster’s wife’s home village in England.

When Jim Cavill acquired five acres of Elston’s land in 1917, it was the beginning of the rise of the town of Elston. The city began to grow in popularity in 1925 after opening the Jubilee Bridge, connecting Southport to Main Beach. Before installing the South Coast Road, the area was only reached by Meyer’s Ferry at the Nerang River. Now easily accessible, investors began purchasing land in the area.

Elston becomes Surfers Paradise

In 1925, Cavill built the town’s first landmark, Surfers Paradise Hotel (now the site of the Surfers Paradise Centre). As more visitors flocked to the town, more establishments and shops were built. After years of lobbying from Cavill, Elston’s less than glamorous name was rebranded to Surfers Paradise in 1933.

A city of high rises

Over the decades, Surfers Paradise grew rapidly into the must-see holiday destination. Attracted to the sunshine and unspoilt beaches, tourists flocked to the city, encouraging the development of holiday apartments and shopping arcades. High-rise buildings began to grow after the construction of the Kinkabool, a 10-storey apartment now protected by the Queensland State Heritage Register. The Surfers Paradise skyline has grown a lot since Kinkabool, with various towering high-rises that have become an iconic landmark of themselves. Keep an eye out on your cruise for the Q1 skyscraper, the sixth tallest residential building in the world.

What will I see on my cruise?

There are still landmarks from Elston and early Surfers Paradise that you can see on your Sea World Cruises sightseeing cruise.

Seaquarium AKA Sea World

Sea World was once known as Seaquarium in 1965. The theme parks oldest ride, Vikings Revenge Flume Ride was built in 1978 and was closed to the public in 2016. You will pass by the Sea World Marine park on your cruise.

Traffic at Jubilee Bridge

Jubilee Bridge AKA Sundale Bridge

Sea World was once known as Seaquarium in 1965. The theme parks oldest ride, Vikings Revenge Flume Ride was built in 1978 and was closed to the public in 2016. You will pass by the Sea World Marine park on your cruise.

Goat Island AKA Chevron Island

The canal estate of Chevron Island was one of the first major land developments in Surfers Paradise in the 1950s. Before it was home to luxury homes, it was farmland home to a large population of goats, earning the title of Goat Island.

Tug of war at Southport Broadwater Parklands

Southport Broadwater Parklands

The much-loved Broadwater Parklands in Southport was declared a public space in 1928. Over 90 years later, it’s grown into a popular hub of activity.

The story behind an Australia’s Top 10 viral video

The story behind Australia’s top 10 viral video

Whale Watching

The incredible moment was awarded a place in the official Tourism Australia Instagram page’s top 10 performing posts of 2020.

In 2020, we witnessed some of the best whale displays in Australia, including a once in a lifetime breach that took the internet by storm. The video of a whale breaching metres from delighted passengers went viral across social media and news outlets. The incredible moment was awarded a place in the official Tourism Australia Instagram page’s top 10 performing posts of 2020. If you are yet to see it, check out the epic moment for yourself here. The breathtaking breach proves yet again that the Gold Coast and Sea World Cruises is the best whale watching in Australia.

Humpback Whales are one of Australia’s most curious, cheeky, and playful mammals. During their annual migration, they travel over 10,000 kilometres from the cold oceans of Antarctica to breed in warm Queensland waters. They love to show off and surprise eager whale watchers along the way. They’re known for tail slaps, head lunges, and the spectacular breach; an incredible display of their strength as they throw their 25-tonne body into the air.

The story behind the surprise capture

Even the best whale watchers can’t always accurately predict when and where a whale will breach. Humpbacks love to dive in down one side of the boat and leap from the opposite. Their unpredictability makes this video even more impressive. A perfect case of ‘right place, right time’.

After departing Main Beach, the crew of Spirit of Migaloo II spotted the featured whale splashing in the horizon. Once located, the humpback enjoyed playing hide and seek with the passengers. Popping up to say hello to the crowds and taking a few exhales,  it showed off its tail fluke before diving deep into the ocean. Everyone waited eagerly for its return. Humpbacks typically spend between 4-15 minutes underwater before they return to the surface. As the minutes ticked by, the chances of seeing it again dwindled. Our skipper and crew were beginning to call it quits, all agreeing that it had headed under for a longer dive (which can be over 45 minutes long). As passengers began to settle in for their cruise home, our whale did what they do best; a stunning breach metres from the boat, drenching delighted guests at the bow. The passenger behind the video was located on top of the boat, the perfect viewing point for a truly once in a lifetime experience.

How can I get a piece of the action?

If like many, this video is making you eager to capture your own whale moment, you have a few more months to wait! Believe us, we’re counting down the days too! Our Gold Coast Whale Watching season begins at the end of May when the humpbacks begin to pass through to the breeding grounds in Northern Queensland. We can’t wait for you to join us for a VIP whale watching experience.

We love seeing videos and images of special captures, don’t forget to tag us @seaworldcruises on Instagram.

Sea World Cruises’ exclusive interview with Santa

Sea World Cruises’ exclusive interview with Santa

Special Cruises

Hero Image

This year, make your child’s wish to meet Santa Claus possible aboard a Sea World Cruises Santa Kid’s Cruise.

It has been a busier year than usual for our favourite jolly man. He has spent the majority of the year isolated with Mrs Claus and his troupe of elves in The North Pole. Eager for a warm change of scenery and with the Australian state borders finally open, he has chosen the Gold Coast for a last-minute holiday.

We got an exclusive interview with the big man himself to ask him about why the Gold Coast is his destination of choice, among other things. A lover of summer sunsets, Santa can’t contain his excitement to announce he will be spending the few hours before his big night with the kids and families of the Gold Coast on December 24

Santa Cruise

Caption for image

“Santa, what are you doing on the Gold Coast?”

“2020 has been quite an unusual year, and I wanted to treat myself to a relaxing getaway. Stuck in the chill of the North Pole, I’m craving sometime in the summer sun; slip, slop, slap of course! I’ve organised something spectacular for the people of the Gold Coast. I’m joining up with the team at Sea World Cruises for a whimsical 1.5 cruise on the sparkling Gold Coast waterways”.

“Do you prefer travel by boat or sleigh?”

“I have always loved the water, but sadly my magical reindeer can’t pull a boat. I love coming to the Gold Coast to have the chance to deliver by water. I’ll be throwing lollies to the families eagerly waiting on the jetties on the cruise route. I love to get the kids involved too, so they get their own bag of treats to help me spread the joy of Christmas along the canals.”

“Did anyone from tag along from the North Pole to help you?”

“Sadly, none of my elves could get past the borders. However! I have a few friends from the Gold Coast who are very excited to be of assistance. I’ve enlisted help from my favourite face painter, Emma. She creates the coolest designs that are sure to bring a smile to any child’s face”.

“What do you love most about the Gold Coast?”

“The views! Who could ever pass up crystal clear water and blue skies? The warm sunshine is also much-needed relief from the cold North Pole winter. It’s the perfect backdrop for a unique photo with me, too!”

Santa is ready to hit the Gold Coast beaches.

“Knowing that I was interviewing you, a lot of kids have asked me to ask you the very important question of: are you taking any last-minute letters?”

“Of course!  It is never too late!  I will be forwarding last-minute wish-lists to my elves back at my workshop. Thank goodness for technology, without ‘ElfBook’ I don’t think I could keep in touch with them so quickly.”

“Do you have any final words of wisdom for the kids this year?”

“If you’re teetering on the edge of the naughty list, or have fallen right into it, I have some advice that’s a quick way out! Be nice to your parents!”

“That’s very true! Do you have anything planned for the parents? ”

“Of course I haven’t forgotten the parents. I’ll be offering complimentary tea, coffee and savoury platter. Mrs Claus has forwarded on her favourite festive drink recipe to the talented bar team to create tasty Christmas cocktails. Oh, and parents; save the milk and leave a cold beer out for me!”

“The subject of the year, COVID-19, how have you managed to travel to the Gold Coast, and what do you suggest we can do when we meet you?”

“My Santa magic has made me be immune to COVID-19 and allowed free travel to the Gold Coast.  I’m aware of the precautions that need to be taken and encourage everyone to follow the COVID-19 big three.”

Santa’s zoom link cut out before we could finish the interview, but he has forward on the details of his spectacular cruise. He can’t wait to see your smiling and merry faces there.

Getting the perfect shot: Four tips to improve your whale photography

By | Blog, Whale Watching

Getting the perfect shot: Four tips to improve your whale photography

Whale Watching

Everybody wants to capture that ‘wow’ factor whale photo; the beautiful tail fluke, the perfect breach…only to end up with a blurry and grainy mess that only if you squint hard enough, you can see a whale. Here are four tips to up your whale watching photography game and bring humpback envy to all of your friends.

1. Patience

Whale watching is all about patience, and to capture the ultimate breach, it requires even more. Whales are wild creatures who swim by their own rules, making it hard to locate where they will appear. This elusive behaviour can be frustrating when you are pursuing the perfect shot. Firstly, find your ideal spot, preferably with the sun behind you. Secondly, listen to your captain. Your captain is knowledgeable in whale activity and will be your eyes and ears on your trip. Pay attention to what they have to say about whale behaviour as this will help you know what to expect and where to look.

2. Know your whales

Different species of whale have different types of behaviour, and to get those ‘wow’ photographs, it is important to learn what each behaviour means. If you are eager for a breach, keep an eye out for a fluke up dive. Humpbacks dive deep into the ocean to gain enough power to launch out of the water. On average a humpback whale will spend 7 minutes underwater, so keep an eye on your watch while you get your camera ready.

Heat pods, when a female is being chased by multiple males, are notorious for sudden changes in direction. As tempting as it is to keep moving back and forth from one side of the boat to the other, staying in the same spot may be a smarter strategy for spotting and photographing whales. Much like picking a checkout line in a supermarket, swapping at the last minute rarely works out for anyone.

3. Camera settings

Have you ever tried taking a photograph of a fast moving object only to get a grainy blur? It is important to adjust your digital or DSLR camera settings correctly to capture fast whale action. To do this, put your camera on shutter priority mode and adjust your camera’s shutter speed to at least 1/1000.

If you don’t own a digital camera, you can also take amazing photographs using your iPhone. The iPhone has a ‘burst feature mode’ which takes photos of action as it happens by holding down the shutter button and releasing it when you’re done.

iPhone’s also offer ‘live mode’ which takes a photo and a video simultaneously. When live mode is turned on, it records a video for a few seconds before and after you take a photo. This feature is a life saver when you just missed out on a spectacular breach, as your phone will have automatically recorded the moments before. From here you can scroll through the video and select the photos you want or save it as a video.

Note: Burst mode will not work when live mode is on.

4. Zoom

To zoom or not to zoom, that is the question. Depending on what type of zoom you have, you can more often than not be better off by ignoring zoom. There are two types of zoom functions: optical and digital. Optical zoom uses the physical lens of a camera to magnify an image without losing quality. This ensures crisp photo quality compared to that of the digital zoom seen on mobile phones. Digital zoom magnifies using the sensor and loses image quality the more you zoom.

If you don’t have optical zoom, wait to take photographs when the boat is stopped or close to the whales. By doing this, it preserves the image quality and can prevent image grain if you choose to crop it.

Most importantly, remember to have fun in your pursuit of the perfect photograph. It can sometimes be discouraging, but with practice, patience and following the tips above, you are on your way to becoming a pro whale photographer on your next Sea World Whale Watching Cruise.

The party of a lifetime: Have your Hen's night with us

Charters & Functions

Are you looking to give your special Hen the ultimate party experience? Then you have come to the right place. Let your Hen’s night be a standout one by chartering our modern cruise vessel – the ideal venue for a classy yet fun party. And the best part – when you book with us, all that is left for you to do is party with the girls! What are you waiting for? Send out those invites and get ready to cruise around the magical Gold Coast waterways with your perfect Bride to Be, with a glass of bubbly in hand of course!

The details

The cruise departs at 7:00PM and returns at 10:00PM on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, giving you and the girls 3 hours of onboard fun! Leaving from the convenient and central location of Surfers Paradise, our cruise is the perfect way to kick off your night on the town. You can enjoy all the benefits of great night scenery and glittering city lights, live entertainment and music, and delicious food and drinks all from the comfort of your own separate VIP section of the vessel. Snack on savoury cheese boards and skip the lines with your own private pop-up bar.

Customisable

We understand how unique every Hen is, both in personality and party preference. This is why we pride ourselves on offering customisable options, suitable for any taste. For example, you can upgrade your package to include hot food, if your Hen prefers risotto balls and rice paper rolls over cheese and breadsticks. Because our parties are highly customisable, we can make each bride feel extra special. After all, it is all about her!

Feel free to pick a theme

Wanting to do something a little bit extra? Why not pick a theme? We at Sea World Cruises love a themed Hens party. Think nautical themed, under-the-sea themed, tropical themed or the classic (and totally chic!) white themed party. While you’re at it, you may want to include some Hens games as well. Our personal favourites include bride and groom trivia games, bridal bingo and pin the pants on the groom (a cardboard cut-out of course!).

Whoever the Bride to Be is to you – your childhood bestie, your sister, your cousin or your work friend – we know you want to give her the perfect send-off into married life in whatever way suits her best. Get in touch with us today and make a booking if you want your Hen to experience a truly magical night out, one that she (and you) will never forget.
